Two Spideys mean a double pleasure.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has long been one of the most anticipated PlayStation games since it was first announced. The hype around the game reached a new Level when Sony announced that Venom would be part of the title. The arrival of the iconic Spider-Man villain in the third title of Insomniac’s award-winning action-adventure franchise was an important milestone. It was an early sign that the game’s developer might be taking things to the next level in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
At the same time, Insomniac had done the work for them, because one of the most difficult challenges was to meet the expectations of Spider-Man Fans with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The previous games in the series, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, were undeniable successes. So, has Insomniac managed to meet the expectations of the Fans? How does Spider-Man 2 compare to its predecessors? Let’s find out in our review of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 here.
First of all, let’s eliminate the obvious, Insomniac has done it again. The Developer has the Hattrick is successful and we have another Blockbuster delivered. I have the Game on PlayStation 5 tested, because there is Boot on no other platform is available.
In terms of graphic quality, the title offers 2 game modes. The first is “Fidelity”, which offers players a performance of 30 fps in 4K resolution with ray tracing, and the second is “Performance”, which offers players 60 fps in 4K on a large scale with ray tracing.
During my time with the game, I stuck to the 30FPS fidelity mode because the world looked much more alive and lively, as well as very high-quality textures in the game.
In addition, the game offered top-notch performance in both modes, with almost no frame drops during my game. I did not experience any major bugs or problems when playing the title. Everything was silky smooth, from start to finish.
The game starts strong and immediately meets the expectations that the players might have. From familiar and popular mechanics to new and innovative crossing techniques such as net wings, you will feel like you have fully acquired the powers of Spider-Man.
At the same time, Insomniac has also managed to make all the new mechanics much more eye-catching. They nailed the swinging and movement mechanics in the Franchise from the first game. But it is commendable that they have always managed to improve the traversal system with each new title.
The game does a great job of making it clear that there are two different Spider-Men in New York instead of just one. Both Miles and Peter have established themselves as superheroes in the city. This makes the missions and sequences take place on a much larger scale with significantly higher stakes. From the start, players throw punches at Sandman, which is the height of a skyscraper. In the end, you are dealing with a sinking cargo ship. It makes you realize that these Spider-Men can do a lot more now than they did before.
The gameplay is similar, but I could feel the improvements. In fact, it reminded me of what I experienced playing God of War: Ragnarok after the 2018 title. The developers made sure to keep all the good things that we liked from previous games while they worked on adding additional parts. The game has diminished the Gadgets that Spidey had in recent games. Instead of more Gadgets, we get interchangeable special abilities, with each Spider-Man offering a unique set of special abilities for different gaming experiences.
New York is getting a lot bigger and the Spider-Men are getting faster
An important part of the game world remains as we have seen in previous games. But this does not mean that things have not changed. In fact, the more you explore, the more changes you will notice in the game. You can easily see that the map is much larger with the two new neighborhoods, Queens and Brooklyn. These areas are not filled with the usual skyscrapers that New York is known for, so our Spideys have been equipped with wings to cross these new regions.
